Samsung’s Next Smartphone Camera Might Have 100 Megapixels

There’s always a new arms race happening in mobile tech. Phones get smaller or bigger. Chips get faster. Games get good again. And you can always count on cameras getting an upgrade. This year, Apple leaned harder on cameras than ever with its new iPhone 11 line, showing off new tools for filmmakers and photographers. They even added a new third lens to the back.

So how does Samsung plan to compete? Not by increasing the number of lenses, but by massively upping the number of megapixels.

As reported by Business Insider, a new credible leak suggests the 2020 flagship Samsung Galaxy S11 could feature the company’s already confirmed 108-megapixel camera module. For reference, your typical high-end smartphone camera only has a tenth as many megapixels as that. They make up the difference with smart software to get the best-looking picture possible. But the sheer hardware muscle of a camera like that definitely wouldn’t hurt. 12,032 x 9,024 pixels!

While 108 megapixel cameras might be innovative in American phones, the feature has already started cropping up in overseas devices. Xiaomi has a smartphone with similar sensor pecs. So as the trade war with China rages on, perhaps we’ll see more manufacturers like Samsung pick and choose parts from different products in different regions to get around restrictions. They’re all coming from the same factories anyway.

For more ridiculous Samsung news, remember that the Galaxy Fold is now a real thing you can buy and hopefully not break. Also check out this huge Samsung Galaxy Note 10 phone that still doesn’t have room for a headphone jack somehow.
